Presents and More Blocks

I just have to show you this…..

…..it’s my Valentines Day present from Ashley.  It finally arrived nearly a month late cause as usual the suppliers list it in their catalogues but don’t have enough in stock.  For months when ever I had to work with Ashley I would need to borrow his tools and there is nothing harder than getting a man (particularly an electrician) to part with his precious pliers or screw driver!  So at last he listened to me and bought me this tool set.  It is designed for women - but the tools in it are good ones.  There’s even gloves, scissors, pruners and a hammer!!!  Yipee and best of all they are purple - yes that lovely soft purple you see in the photo - so hopefully when I have to work with a bunch of plumbers, builders and one electrician - they won’t pinch my tools.  I have added a shady hat and some sun screen and now I feel fully equipped to deal with most emergencies….roflmol….well at least the kind that involve me hunting for a hammer to hang a picture hook for my latest photo or quilt….wicked grin.

February’s Baltimore Block is finished from Fat Cat Patterns.  I had to machine applique this one with satin stitch as I can no longer hand sew them.  I’m still deciding if I want to pull out the button hole stitch I did on January’s block or leave it and use it as a focal point in the centre of the quilt.  March’s block is there and I have printed it out - but not tackled it yet.  Ohh and check out the cute owl pattern that has just been posted there it’s called Hooty Toots.

I have also finished the mystery quilt from the Stitch and Frame Shop.  I like the pattern (Jewel Box they called it) and it looks better in the photo than real life - but I wish I had chosen different colours.  Personally I think this quilt needs lots of contrast.  I could see it with black or navy blue background  fabric and lots of jewel toned hand dyed fabric for the pattern. It still needs borders - although that won’t be for a while until I decide what I want to do with it.  I’m also trying to convince Nicola that she could easily make this quilt - in fact I think it would be a good exercise  for her but time will tell if that happens.

Right off to do some more sewing.  Nicola, James and I spent part of the morning cleaning up the disaster that James calls his bedroom.  You can now actually walk in the door to his room without falling over anything.  I have done four loads of washing - which are nearly dry as soon as they hit the line it’s so hot and I have just heard from Ashley and Elise who drove to Melbourne today to pick up a new car that we bought.  It’s a Suzuki (which James loves cause he wants a Suzuki - goodness knows why) which will be small enough to tow behind the bus, economical around town and is manual for Elise to learn to drive in - she is able to get her learners permit next year and there isn’t a snowflakes chance in hell she will be driving the Range Rover.  The weary travellers will be home tonight about 6 pm after a very long hot day.

I hope your day is a good one.

Block of The Day

More photos have been loaded to my Block a Day photo set on Flickr.

So far I’m keeping up with them all although it does help that I spend an hour or so cutting out quite a few days blocks so at least if I’m busy I know it won’t take long to whip up each block. It seems strange but I have made 63 blocks already. Enough for a couple of quilt….vbg….but I’m not going down that road until I have them all done. Ahhhhh there’s nothing like a challange. As always pop over to my flickr site to check them out if you’re interested. Hopefully I now have them organised so that the

Mail Call

There is nothing nicer than receiving a nice big parcel in the mail - especially after I had had a relaxing two hours in the hair dressers having my hair cut and foils (blonde ones) added.  Boy don’t I feel glamorous…roflmol.

Now I did say I wasn’t going to buy any more fabric this year………..or any more of anything for that matter.  I really need to start using all I have before I add to the stock pile again and I haven’t.  I ordered this fabric at the Christmas sales and had paid for it well before the end of the New Year - so that gets me nicely off the hook….vbg.  Isn’t the above photo stunning…lol.  Twenty nine metres of the most delicious quilting fabrics in colours I adore - funny about that as I choose them - all nice and ready for me to use. And no they aren’t all there - some are in the following photo for those who are trying to count how many fabrics there are.

Some have already had a use planned for them - see no fabric this year sitting around unwanted or unused.

I found this Baltimore Blues Quilt Pattern at Fat Cat Patterns - truly one of the most awesome sites I have found for ages.  Lots and lots of free patterns including Block of the Month - of which the Baltimore quilt is one - and the best Guinea Pig Applique Pattern that James has ever found and therefore wants for his birthday - but that’s another post.  Do pop over and have a look at Sindy’s site.  I’m sure you will find something there you want to try.

I needed a dark, medium and light blue, dark and medium yellow and dark and medium green plus the cream for the back ground.  The light blue are my hand dyed fabrics, the cream I already had and the other blues, yellows  and greens are from the newly acquired fabric.

Ohh and I have allowed myself a loop hole in the “no buying, no spending money policy”…. I am allowed to buy at the Op Shops.  If I didn’t have one outlet I would go completely mad.  Time will tell if I can do it - but I’m sure going to try hard.

Teach The Children The REAL Meaning of Christmas

Just a week before Christmas I had a visitor. This is how it happened. I just finished the household chores for the night and was preparing to go to bed when I heard a noise in the front of the house. I opened the door to the front room, and to my surprise, Santa himself stepped out from behind the Christmas tree. He placed his finger over his mouth so I would not cry out. “What are you doing?” I started to ask him.

The words choked in my throat, as I saw he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone. Gone was the eager boisterous soul we all know. He then answered me with a simple statement, TEACH THE CHILDREN! I was puzzled: What did he mean? He anticipated my question, and with one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind the tree.

As I stood there bewildered, Santa said, Teach the Children! Teach them the old meaning of Christmas. The meaning that a now-a-day Christmas has forgotten!

Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a FIR TREE and placed it on the mantle. Teach the Children that the pure green color of the stately fir tree remains green all year round, depicting the everlasting hope of mankind. All the needles point heavenward, making it a symbol of man’s thoughts turning toward heaven.

He again reached into his bag and pulled out a brilliant STAR. Teach the Children that the star was the heavenly sign of promises long ago. God promised a Savior for the world, and the star was the sign of fulfillment of that promise.

He then reached into the bag and pulled out a CANDLE. Teach the Children that the candle symbolizes that Christ is the light of the world, and when we see this great light we are reminded of He who displaces the darkness.

Once again he reached into his bag and then removed a WREATH and placed it on the tree. Teach the Children that the wreath symbolizes the eternal nature of love. Real love never ceases. Love is one continuous round of affection.

He then pulled out from his bag an ornament of HIMSELF. Teach the Children that Santa Claus symbolizes the generosity and good will we feel during the month of December.

He reached in again and pulled out a HOLLY LEAF. Teach the Children the holly plant represents immortality. It represents the crown of thorns worn by our Savior. The red holly berries represent blood shed by Him.

Next he pulled out a GIFT from the bag and said, “Teach the Children that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift. Teach the Children that the wise men bowed before the holy babe and presented Him with gold, frankincense, and myrrh. We should give gifts in the same spirit as the wise men.”

Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a CANDY CANE and hung it on the tree. Teach the Children that the candy cane represents the shepherd’s crook. The crook on the shepherd’s staff helps bring back strayed sheep from the flock. The candy cane is the symbol that we are our brother’s keeper.

He reached in again and pulled out an ANGEL. Teach the Children that it was the angels that heralded in the glorious news of the Savior’s birth. The angels sang ‘Glory to God in the highest, on earth, peace and good will.’

Suddenly I heard a soft twinkling sound, and from his bag he pulled out a BELL. Teach the Children that as the lost sheep are found by the sound of a bell, it should bring people to the fold. The bell symbolizes guidance and return.

Santa looked at the tree and was pleased. He looked back at me and I saw the twinkle was back in his eyes. He said, “Remember, teach the Children the true meaning of Christmas, and not to put me in the center, for I am but a humble servant of the ONE WHO IS, and I bow down and worship Him, our Lord, our God.”

I may have solved the Mystery

Following advice and basically just thinking “it can’t be that hard” I did a google search for my mystery bulb using the following terms…..

bulb, spring flowering, tubular pink flowers, single spike, broad glossy green leaves”

After searching quite a few sites which offered everything from bulbs to tubular pink flowers, I found a site which sold bulbs - some of them rare. They had this bulb Veltheimia bracteata which is also known by it’s common names of “forest lily, sandui (sand onion), winter red hot poker”.

Both Mum and I think that this may be it. Certainly the description when I searched further described what I have - or at least sounded like it did. Futher looking found photos which also seem to be what I have (see below)….

So unless someone else can shed light on the subject I am going to believe that it is this bulb. By the sounds of it it can be propogated fairly easily and likes life under trees - so I think I am going to try it (when it dies down and I get more time) and plant it under my Chinese Elm where hopefully it will naturalise.

Ohhh and imagine my surprise when both Karen and Sion said it may be a Red Hot Poker - and one of it’s common names is Winter Red Hot Poker. That’s the last time I think I know what plants I have in the garden.

11.14 am - Further note…vbg… Thanks to Maureen B. I have had my deductions confirmed and it is Veltheimia bracteata (See Maureen’s comment in the previous post).  I knew I should have emailed you Maureen and sent a photo - next time I will do that first.  Maureen said hers have naturalised quite well so now I am going to have a go.

Thanks again.

My Nursery

Remember I said in yesterdays post how I wouldn’t be putting in anymore plants? Well I will have to put in just a few.

This is my nursery for my seedlings….

I am having lots of luck this year with starting off seedlings - providing I grow them in potting mix (not seed raising mix) AND I use bigger pots, not seedling trays.

Apricot Nastursiums (Right) and Prince of Orange Sweet Peas (left) and yes they are orange. I couldn’t resist them.

Lettuce Seedlings. I have no hope of getting any seeds to germinate in the garden - despite plenty of water and mulch. Too many hungry critters I think - plus I’m sure the climate has something to do with it. Carrots are the only success and that is buy sowing the seeds, mulching over the top, watering well then laying an old pillowcase over the seed bed and watering that as well. It seems to keep in the moisture long enough for the seeds to germinate. Pa used to use a hessian sack and always had success.

One tiny Picotee Cosmos. I am hoping more geminate as this variety is white with a pinkish/red strip through it and I want to plant it near my “old” red roses.

Remember this bulb? Does anyone know the name of it.

It’s developing seed pods and I would like to have a go at trying to grow them but need to search for propogation information. Any help would be appreciated.

An Addition - Thanks Karen and Sion for your thoughts.  It definately is NOT a Red Hot Poker.  They are much larger and have finer more strappy type leaves and I have them growing in the garden so at least I can identify them….vbg.  This is a bulb of some sort and the leaves are very broad and very, very shiny.  Back to the drawing board with searchig for it….will try a google search though.  Surely someone has seen it somewhere.

Ohh before I forget - we had rain.  Not lots but on top of watering last night the garden is looking very fresh - if you ignore the dead grass that is.   Right off to sew again.  Sponge cakes  are made (had to use up the eggs), washing is on the line and I’m in the mood to stitch.

Quick Bus Update

There has been lots of work done on the bus you just can’t see it mores the pity. Ashley finished welding up all the boxes and bits and peices he needed to last night so at last we can get the sides put on the bus. Ashley’s mate is coming on Saturday to measure it up and will order the panels Monday.

They should be here Tuesday and the bus should be not so naked looking by the end of the week - all going well. Naturally we are both crossing fingers and toes and anything and everything else that it all goes smoothly.

I cleaned the inside thoroughly on Monday. There was so much dust and dirt and wood shavings that I emptied the vacumm cleaner twice before I had it all. Ashley has put the seats back in the front…..

…carpeted the front section, moved the hand brake (it was one of the items defected in the first road worthy- apparently it was too close to the drivers seat) and in general had a tidy up.

There is still carpet to go on the roof but that’s been ordered and Mum and I have that job of installing it. Painting still needs to be done and the gas bottles (the bus runs on gas) have to be checked by a qualified person and plated. That bit was organised and lunch time and P. will pop round as soon as he has time and do that bit.

Painting and Concreting - Finished

Unbeleiveable but true - our painting and concreting adventures have finished - however there is still the matter of tiling and grouting said tiling to be done, not to mention fixing the kids shower screens so it doesn’t leak any more, but that’s the subject of another post.

Since Ashley had the roller and paint tray already out and used, he decided to recoat the passage way as well…..

It now looks so much brighter and tidier and alway he did was one coat of paint.  The tiles that are missing (just behind his feet) are now also in place.

The laundry cupboard now has had its second coat of paint and I just have to wait for the paint to harden properly (I suspect that could take a week considering how cold it has got) and I can sort out my laundry properly.

The wall in the dining room is done, skirting board painted and the big cabinet is now back into position.

All the cups and saucers that live on the shelves in the cabinet are now back into position, including a new/old tea set that belonged to my Granny which I found hiding in the cupboard.

The concreting is finished….

Isn’t this the most beautiful sight???

Or maybe you prefer this angle……grin.

This is the other pergola that was concreted yesterday.  Now it just needs it’s roof put on, landscaping done around it and it will be very pleasant to sit in during the summer with the breeze blowing through.

Train Crash

For those who have seen the news about the truck that crashed into a passenger train in the North West of the State and wondering if that is near me , it is.  The accident happened about half an hour from Swan Hill where the railway line crosses the highway.  You can read some details here.

There is much speculation around town as to who was on the train and who has been injured, or worse still, lost their life, but until families and the authorities are ready to announce details - that is all it will remain.  From what has been said a great many people on the train were from Swan Hill as this is it’s departure point for Melbourne.

Can I just say though - like so many other drivers I have driven across that railway crossing - which is marked with lights, but no boom gates - so many times I couldn’t count them.  The train track crosses the highway there at an odd angle - which can be quite deceptive at times as to how fast the train is travelling and a great many decide to ignore the lights and drive though working on the theory that they can beat the train, and in a lot of instances they do.

I don’t know how or why the accident happened - it is something that the authorities mustwork out with their experts.  I do know that the truck driver and his family are in my prayers , as are the friends and family of the dead and injured and the living, as they will have a long and difficult road ahead in dealing with the whole situation. I must admit though - from now I on will be slowing to a crawl before I cross that particular peice of track and looking twice and even three times before venturing across it.

None of my family or friends were involved in the accident but I would ask that you keep the families of those involved, those who came to the aid of the injured, the police, fire and ambulance officers, doctors and nurses in your prayers.  There are several dead, a lot with serious injuries and many who will retain mental scars for quite some years to come.

It’s unfortuante that incidents like this suddenly make us realise just how fragile and precious human life is.

Thank you.
